Check in with yourself

Our minds are like busy train stations – with thoughts rushing in and out all day. But how often do we stop to notice where those trains are heading… or how we feel about the journey (or destination?!)

The Experiment

Set your phone alarm to go off three times today.

Whenever the alarm sounds – whatever you’re doing – pause, and ask yourself: “What am I thinking about?”

Don’t judge your inner voice (or voices!). But listen – properly. Engage with your stream of (un)consciousness. If it’s heading somewhere unhelpful—stress, worry, or negativity—gently steer yourself into happier waters by taking a deep breath, noticing what’s about you and asking:

  • Is there anything wrong with this moment?
  • What can I do to make it EVEN better?

Why Try It

  • Studies show we spend almost 50% of our waking hours lost in thought. And these thoughts stray into the negative. (Evolution has hardwired us for negativity bias. When encountering a sabre-toothed tiger, our ancestors survived by fearing the worst…)
  • In short, brains are best when engaged with! Too much time in autopilot mode drains our energy and focus. Interrupting this cycle strengthens our brain’s ability to regulate emotions and stay present (neuroplasticity is our friend!).
