Some Mondays, it can feel a triumph to put one foot in front of the other. But as you trudge to the office today, (or nip out for teabags before your first Teams call), why not grab the chance to connect with other people – and make this a really good morning?
The Experiment
Make eye contact and say an upbeat and energised “good morning” to five people whom you might not normally greet.
It could the busy barista who makes your coffee; a random person in the lift, or a dog walker in the park. Nothing too demanding – just a quick greeting and a smile, as you grab your cup; catch their eye – or side-step the dog.
Notice their response, and see how it makes you feel.
Why Try It
· Studies show that small, positive interactions throughout the day reduce stress and boost dopamine, the neurotransmitter tied to motivation and focus.
· Greeting strangers stretches our social comfort zone, helping build confidence and encouraging us to take other positive social risks.
· Saying ‘hello’ to people activates the brain’s social networks, releasing oxytocin—the “bonding hormone”—which boosts trust and collaboration.
Treat more people to a cheery wave, and enjoy the ripple effect. A simple but heartfelt ‘hello’ can make others feel valued, and prime them for empathy—essential for teamwork, productivity, (and life!)
