Lighten your load with micro-achievements that add up to lasting change. Start with a quick trick to feel good about yourself: the (drum roll please) TINY TIDY!
That’s right – it’s January, you can barely find your socks. You might struggle to re-organise your whole workspace but, boy, can you overhaul one desk drawer!
Take 10 minutes to clear space – physically and mentally – for a shiny new year.
TRY THIS:
- Set a timer for 10 minutes (we’ve given you one below).
- Choose one small area—your desk drawer or email inbox; your bedside table or kitchen spice rack!
- Declutter: Keep what’s useful or joyful; let go of the rest.
- Arrange what remains in a way that feels good….
There now. As you bin the dental floss/ say goodbye to ancient sage, don’t you feel better?
WHY IT WORKS:
Clutter stresses us out. Research shows a messy space increases mental load, while tidy spaces boost focus and control. Plus, completing a small task releases dopamine—your brain’s “yay, we did it!” chemical.
MAKE IT STICK:
- Build a 10-minute tidy into your routine (wrap up lunch with a desk reset? Finish the week with a scythe through your ‘Misc’ folder).
- Snap a “before and after” pic to celebrate progress. (Send them to someone who REALLY loves you..!).
- Rediscover the little things that bring delight to your day. (Hello again, favourite mug/ Hot chilli powder, THAT’S where you’ve been hiding!)
A tiny tidy could be just the boost you need today. So what are you waiting for? Start rummaging through those drawers now!
