Be honest: when you catch yourself in the mirror, do you stop and WHOOP WITH DELIGHT? If not, why not? You’re amazing!
High-performers have a tendency to be hypercritical. But if you want to give your team great feedback and positive reinforcement, you need to to practise on yourself.
Recognising all the great stuff about yourself rewires your brain to release dopamine and serotonin. So, stop skirting over your successes. Don’t run yourself down. Big yourself up!
Try this experiment
Pick up a pen (yes, now!) and write down 10 reasons it’s amazing to be you.
Be specific and detailed; combine ‘big picture’ stuff (I have a family who loves me), with the small joys (‘I’m wearing matching socks!’). Focus on recent things that have happened, as well as stuff you’re looking forward to.
Value the validation work brings you, (‘I’ve got a busy but stimulating day ahead’), and treasure the personal victories, (‘‘Those matching socks? They’re SO SOFT #myfeetarewinningatlife”). When you’ve finished your list, notice how you much better you feel!
Why it works
Focusing on the good stuff rewires your mind to look for the upsides, building resilience and creativity. The mental shift boosts creative problem-solving by reducing stress and opening the mind to new possibilities. Power-up your positivity, and see how it turbo-charges your team!
There’s a reason Top 10 lists are iconic: our brains love patterns and manageable chunks of information. Listing 10 things challenges you to dig deeper (pushing past surface-level gratitude) without leaving you feeling overwhelmed.
