‘Future You’ has it figured out

Well done, you made it through January! You’re radiating positive vibes, full of energy, and ready to take on the world. Then…

Splat, February hits. Mornings are still dark; evenings are still cold, and, somewhere in between, motivation has taken a loong comfort nap.

We could give you all sorts of advice about surviving February. But honestly? You know what works. Somewhere inside you, Future You is rolling their eyes, waiting for the rest of you to catch up.

 THE EXPERIMENT

Write a letter from your Future Self, dated March 1st. Imagine you’ve made it—you’re on top of the world, and had the BEST FEBRUARY EVER!

Start with:

“Hey [Your Name], congratulations on having an amazing February, this is what you did to make it happen…”

Then write it down. The tiny daily rituals that helped. The positive habits that made a difference. The things that kept you from spiralling into a pit of existential despair somewhere around mid-month…

Be specific. Be kind. Future You has been there, done that, and has the wisdom to prove it.

Now, stash that letter somewhere handy and read it whenever February feels impossible.

WHY TRY IT

Studies on mental time travel (yes, that’s a thing) show that picturing your future self overcoming challenges makes you more likely to actually do it.

Here’s why:

  • Boosts Resilience: Research from the University of Southern California found that visualizing a successful outcome enhances perseverance when facing challenges.
  • Enhances Decision-Making: A study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology showed that imagining future selves leads to choices that align better with long-term goals.
  • Strengthens Self-Control: Neuroscience research indicates that mental simulations activate the prefrontal cortex, improving impulse control and strategic thinking.
  • Increases Motivation: The concept of “episodic future thinking” has been linked to improved goal commitment and increased effort in tasks.

So don’t let February take you down. ‘March You’ is already on the other side, cheering you on (and marching forward!)

Write the letter. Take your own advice. Future You has it figured out.

Now ‘be more Biff’, and make like a tree…
