Sing!

The festive season is just one, jolly sing-along… and yes, we can feel you cringing from here! When the carols start, how many of us duck the high notes, or fail to get past a hum? Big shame, because research shows a sing-along is one of the quickest ways to boost resilience and joy. Group singing releases endorphins and oxytocin, reducing stress, and increasing feelings of connection and trust. That’s why at TCX, we love to close virtual workshops with a sing-along (yes, really! What’s a group share without Cher?) Try this experiment Start your next meeting with a round of Guess that Song. You go first! Hum (or sing) a few lines from a popular song (‘Last Christmas’, anyone?) Then get the others to guess what it is – and prove it, by joining in! On a Teams call? Ask everyone to pick up a hairbrush (or microphone equivalent). Then hit one of the below links, and share your screen. Feel the collective suck-in of air… then the joy as you let go and sing together! Why it works Studies show singing in a group synchronizes heartbeats, creating a sense of unity. Plus, it improves mood and mental health. The magic lies in the doing: the vulnerability created by harmonizing with others can transform into a life-affirming experience of shared humanity. So don’t worry about the odd wobbly note. Yodel your way out of your comfort zone, and hit a holiday high! Want to take the experiment further? Spread harmony, and start a workplace choir 96% of work choir participants report a reduction in stress, and 86% feel less socially isolated. The Sainsbury’s Choir, in particular, has proved a silo-breaker: Formed in 2013 to sing at company and charity events, the choir unites people across departments and locations, strengthening culture, boosting engagement, and making a vast organisation feel a close-knit team.
