Be neighbourly

Scrooge learned the hard way: helping others, and contributing to a community, builds our resilience; reduces stress, and boosts purpose and connection. Put simply, we’re better together—so why not brighten your community with a small act of kindness for a neighbour?

Try these experiments

A Surprise Doorstep Drop-Off

  • Buy (or bake!) some muffins or festive treats.
  • Leave them on a neighbour’s doorstep with a note (“I was baking, and thought you might like enjoy a cookie or two! From Number 42’). This way you get to be kind without worrying about conversation!

Light up a Letterbox!

  • Make a neighbour feel valued: pop a thank-you card through their door, mentioning something specific they’ve done: “Thanks for keeping your garden looking so lovely—it brightens my day!”

The Mini Litter Pick

  • Pull on your winter gloves, and take a quick walk around your neighbourhood with a bag to pick up any stray litter.
  • Bonus points: recruit a friend or neighbour to join you for a chat while you clean. Who knows what new connections you might spark?

Why they work:

Helping your neighbours isn’t just good for them—it’s transformative for you! Acts of kindness trigger a “helper’s high,” boosting happiness; reducing stress by 16%, and increasing life satisfaction by 12%, (Harvard research). In his book Fortitude, Bruce Daisely makes a powerful case for resilience being a collective strength – it’s our communal bonds and shared experiences that help us flourish in the face of adversity.

At work, it can drive creativity and connection—Cisco’s recent volunteering program saw employee engagement rise by 77% and productivity by 23%.

Perform a small act of neighbourly kindness and send out happy ripples!
